The Lacuna is a beautifully written book. It is clever, and witty but also painful and warm. Barbara Kingsolver's main protaganist is Harrison Sheperd into whose life we gain an intimate and private look through his diaries and his letters. The book is remarkable because reality meets fiction through the cast of charecters that Harrison meets. The painter Frida Kahlo for example is brought to life with colour and dept. As The Lacuna reaches its conclusion, it is impossible to put down.
I can understand why The Lacuna received the Orange Prize for fiction. The judges described Barbara Kingsolver's novel as: Fiction of a breath taking scale with shattering moments of poignancy!!
