Under The Hawthorn Tree
By
Marita Conlon-McKenna

Hi I am eleven years old and in fifth class. In school I am reading Under The Hawthorn Tree. Me and my class and teacher think its very sad.
It is  set during the Irish famine and there is barely any food.
The main charecters are Peggy, Michael, Eily, Brigid, and their mam and dad.
Their mam has to look for food. Eily is the eldest and has to look after, Michael, Peggy and Brigid. Their dad is barely in the story because he is trying to work as hard as possible to earn money for his family.

It is a very good book, not just for kids.
I enjoyed this book.
It showed how people got through the great Irish famine.
It is a heartbreaking story
