Dominique Delahaye has an idyllic lifestyle: Happily married to a husband who adores her, a daughter who is also a good friend, a beautiful home that her husband built especially for them. Her days are filled by attending charity lunches to raise money and helping to promote her successful husband's business empire, her life is busy but enjoyable, and she has become accustomed to herself and Brendan being known in the media as "The Fabulous Delahayes".
Then overnight Brendan disappears, and his business empire is in terrible trouble, from the banks, creditors and investors. With the fraud squad at the door, and her life crashing down around her ears, Dominique must deal with the aftermath of her husband's disappearance, both emotionally and financially.
While this is indeed a very timely story in the current economic climate in Ireland, I found parts of this story completely implausible. I don't want to ruin the story but I found the idea that people would be so forgiving to someone who sneaks out in the middle of the night, leaving those left behind to face the mess that they have created, utterly unbelievable.
However, despite these misgivings this book is ideal for a sun holiday or during a long commute. It is despite the various subjects dealt with: post natal depression, marital affairs, and bankruptcy, a light-hearted read for the most part and pure escapism. I can't say that I enjoyed this book but I recognise that Sheila O'Flanagan is excellent at what she does.
