The Gargoyle opens with a harrowing scene that leaves the nameless narrator physically and mentally damaged it seems beyond repair. Previous to this incident the narrator was handsome, well off but by his own admission morally bankrupt. Now deprived of the looks and the lifestyle he cherished, confined to a hospital bed he believes his life is over.
But the mysterious Marianne Engel walks into his hospital room and with her his despair dims. The most stunning thing is not that she is willing to nurse him but her claim that this will be the third time she has saved his life- the first was in medieval Germany when they were lovers and he was a mercenary.
Andrew Davidson's debut novel is an international best seller and a wonderful read. It slowly draws you in and becomes difficult to put down as the narrator fights for Marianne against what she sees as her destiny. And though it steers clear of the fairy tale ending, this books's redemptive conclusion is filled with optimism and tenderness.
