DLR LIBRARY BLOG

One Day
By
David Nicholls

This is an unusual take on the boy meets girl story.
Emma and Dexter meet at their university graduation night on the 15th of July in 1988. They go their separate ways and live separate lives.

The reader dips into their lives every year on the 15th of July and we watch them grow up, get careers, have relationships.

I always enjoy books where you get into the psyche of the main characters and you definitely do that in this book.
The book is not a traditional romance because it deals with growing up, finding your place in the world and the changes in music and media through the years.

It is an interesting idea to focus on one day a year, it is a bit like getting a snapshot of the characters lives. Overall I enjoyed this book but I think if you were a child of the 80's and 90's you would love it because there are lots of cultural references throughout.
