The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the first part of the millennium trilogy written by Swedish author and journalist Stieg Larsson. The books were published post- humously after Larsson’s untimely death in 2004. The trilogy have become international best sellers. This is the first volume of the trilogy and after finishing this book I am very much looking forward to the next two. Some incredible thrillers are coming from Scandinavian countries (The Henning Mankell books and the Camilla Lacksberg to name just two) and The Girl with the Dragon is a superb example of a Scandinavian thriller. Not only is the story utterly gripping but also the author captures wonderful glimpse of Swedish life. It is an intelligent thriller and probably one of the best of its kind in recent years.
Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder-and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, defiant computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet’s disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark appalling family history. But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far the family are prepared to go to protect themselves..........
