The Story of Edgar Sawtelle
David Wroblewski
Edgar Sawtelle is a much loved only child. He lives with his parents on a remote farm in Wisconsin. The three of them share an idyllic and loving life, raising a unique breed of dog named after the family: The Sawtelles. The family are devoted to their dogs, and the dogs return this devotion.
Edgar is an extremely gifted young man, who has been mute since birth.
When Edgar's uncle returns unexpectedly to the farm, their wonderful life is shattered irretrievably and taking only three of the dogs, no food or money, Edgar is forced to flee all that he knows and loves.
This is a beautifully written book. The retelling of an age old story is well done. However it is the descriptions of Edgar and his interactions with the dogs who he loves that will win your heart.
David Wroblewski's book is quite simply superb, his imagery is wonderfully vivid, sucking the reader into Edgar's world and into Edgar's mind. The book will remain with you long after you have read the final page.
I would recommend this amazing debut to everyone and I look forward to the next book from this gifted author.
