Susan HillA serial killer is shooting dead young women in the town of Lafferton. The killings have no apparent connection apart from the fact that all the victims are young and female.
Simon Serrailler and his team are facing huge pressure to solve the killing spree with no idea of a motive, very little evidence and mounting public and political unrest.
This is the fourth book in the Simon Serrailler series. To be honest the book is full of doom and gloom. As well as the victims of the serial killer, there is a large dead body count by the end of the novel. Suicides, deaths from cancer, and the devastating illness of Simon's brother in law are all backdrops to the main story.
Serrailler is also finding it extremely difficult to accept that there is a new woman in his father's life.
I found that there is a feeling of lack of coherence in the writing of this book. Which is a great pity because Susan Hill is an award winning writer. Her other books were wonderfully written.
I can only hope that this is a temporary anomaly in this authors work, and that she will return to her previous excellence.
