Winter is closing in and what's better than having a good box set with several hours guaranteed entertainment lined up?
We hope everyone realises that there's a wide assortment of DVDs available to borrow in your local library as well as books. We have LOADS of box sets but sometimes people don't realise exactly what an extensive range we have because the most popular DVD box sets are almost always out on loan or on a reservation list.*it's very important to remember that the standard three week loan applies to DVDs, irrespective of how many discs and hours viewing a single item may contain - and sometimes it's not always possible to renew an item that's out on loan.
The Killing
Join the indefatible detective Sarah Lund as she leads a murder investigation in this Danish crime series. Her quiet stoicism and dogged determination characterise her deductive style and her jumper has become a pop culture star in its own right.
The Bridge
A body is discovered on the bridge that links Denmark to Sweden, lying precisely on the border between the two countries. Genial Danish dectective Martin Rohde must share jurisdiction with the socially awkward Swedish Saga Noren.
Borgen
Well crafted Danish political drama about an idealistic prime minister's rise to power and how she deals with the inevitable compromises she must make - personally and politically. Much more interesting than a one sentence summary can show!
Spiral
French crime drama that looks at the whole legal system from the investigating police and detectives to the magistrates and barristers involved in each case.
Braquo
Another French police drama - focusing on an internal investigation and four officers determind to uncover the reason for their colleagues suicide.
The Wire
Superlative crime drama exploring the Baltimore drug scene through the eyes of the drug dealers and the undercover team investigating them.
Breaking Bad
When high school chemistry teacher Walter White finds out he has terminal cancer he embarks on a secret criminal career producing crystal meth (so he can leave money for his family after his death).
Deadwood
Set in the 1880's and follows the lives of the inhabitants (including Wild Bill hickock and Calamity Jane) of Deadwood - a lawless mining town in South Dakota.
Battlestar Galactica
A gritty reworking of the 1970's sci-fi TV series. Humanity is under attack from Cylons (robots who look super-human) and the few survivors are forced to begin an epic journey through space in search of the fabled 13th colony of Earth. Once again - much much better than a one line plot summary suggets.
Rome
Drama set in the last days of the Roman Empire, focused on the life of centurion Lucius Vorenus as he returns to his family after several years campaigning abroad.
True Blood
Paranormal drama that imagines a world where vampires suddenly confirm their existence to an understandably surprised world. The action is centred on a small town waitress Sookie Stackhouse, who considers her telepathic abilites a curse.
